The SHED
Project Overview
Multi-use Camaraderie
This livestock plaza and sheep barn, aptly named “The SHED,” stands as the latest facility designed to host the annual Open Class Sheep exhibit during the South Dakota State Fair. Beyond its role in the annual fair, the versatile structure accommodates equine and other livestock events throughout the year, making it a vital addition to the community. Highlights include a dedicated education center for learning and community engagement and a 30-bay wash rack to streamline animal care. At the heart of the facility lies a 2,300-square-foot centralized show ring, designed to provide an optimal experience for exhibitors and spectators. The design supports both functionality and flexibility, ensuring the facility can meet diverse agricultural and event needs.

Spanning nearly 41,000 square feet, The SHED features an expansive interior equipped with updated amenities. An 800 sq. ft. mezzanine gives event attendees a bird’s eye view of the facility interior, and clerestory glazing directs natural light throughout the space.
As a community effort, construction of The SHED is partially publicly funded, and groundbreaking coincided with the 2024 South Dakota State Fair.
